Iowa is home to 70 state parks, each showcasing the state's natural beauty, with winding rivers, rolling hills and unique geological formations. Yet, for the more than half a million Iowans with disabilities, accessing these stunning sights can be challenging. Simple tasks such as using a restroom or navigating a sidewalk can be significant hurdles in each of Iowa's state parks. At least half of the structures, including restrooms and cabins, in Iowa's state parks have accessibility issues, according to David Downing, a former Iowa Department of Natural Resources executive officer and park asset manager who completed an assessment of most of Iowa's state parks and forests from 2021 to 2023.
