Hundreds gathered for the Menendez brothers' first court hearing on Monday, causing enough chaos that their legal team is now considering hiring security.
Erik and Lyle Menendez, who remain incarcerated near San Diego for the 1989 murders of their parents, were set to appear via video link for the first time in nearly 30 years. Supporters, media, and livestreamers from across the country gathered outside the courthouse, where the crowd overwhelmed the brothers' aunts, Terry and Joan.
Outgoing Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon had pushed for reduced sentences for the brothers, with a hearing originally scheduled for December 11. However, the judge postponed the hearing until January 30 and 31 to allow newly-elected District Attorney Nathan Hochman, who takes office on December 2, time to review the case.
