This image shows off Venus, Earth’s fiery twin, as mapped by more than a decade of radar investigations—concluding with the 1990-1994 Magellan mission. The colors you see here represent different elevations, bringing out the fine details of the planet’s rugged surface.
Magellan was the first spacecraft to map the entire surface of Venus, making many scientific discoveries. For example, the mission found that at least 85% of Venus’s surface is covered with volcanic flows.
Despite the high surface temperatures (887ºF or 475ºC) and high atmospheric pressures (92 atmospheres), the complete lack of water makes erosion on Venus an extremely slow process. As a result, surface features can hang around for hundreds of millions of years. Magellan burned up about 10 hours after being commanded to plunge into the Venusian atmosphere.
