This morning Amal, like thousands of Syrian children, woke to a new reality - a Syria that for the first time in decades is free from tyranny. No one yet knows what comes next for children like Amal but everyone watching surely hopes that at last the Syrian people will be the architects of their own future. Perhaps Amal is already imagining running around the streets of her free country, the wind blowing in her hair, laughing with her friends and cousins. Since 2021 she has made many extraordinary journeys and met millions of people, carrying her message “don’t forget about us”. And when it is safe to do so, like many of her extended family around the world, one day she may make another extraordinary journey – home.
