Hundreds gathered at Portland’s Pioneer Courthouse Square on a chilly Sunday for the first night of Hanukkah and the lighting of the menorah. The event, organized by Chabad of Oregon, included live music and several speakers from the Portland area’s Jewish community. It also honored Ukrainian refugees, including Inna Kovtun, a well-known refugee who fled Ukraine nine months ago with her 8-year-old daughter Polina. They now live in the Portland-area. In Hillsboro, the Chabad Jewish Center of Hillsboro held its public menorah lighting at Orenco Station Plaza, with free doughnuts and latkes and a performance by fire juggler Rhys Thomas.
