Can cold water immersion (CWI) serve as a potential therapy for the treatment of depression?
If you follow my stories, you know that I have a plunge in my apartment that I use every single day.
I experience enormous benefits from doing this, from physiological to psychological. What does the science say?
A 2020 study examined the physiological effects of cold water immersion on mood (PMID: 10751106):
Ten participants were submerged in 57°F water up to their heads for an hour.
Measurements taken at 0, 30, 60, and 120 minutes showed:
✅Norepinephrine levels skyrocketed by over 500%.
✅ Dopamine levels surged by 250%.
Even after 120 minutes post-immersion, both norepinephrine and dopamine levels remained higher than baseline.
This neurotransmitter response might hint at why cold therapy is being explored as a depression treatment tool 🧠
Do you do any form of cold water immersion?
