It goes without saying that no lifestyle is perfect: not the cushy “Western” lifestyle many of us are used to, and not the Hadzabe lifestyle that Hadiya so praises. Reality check: today, the Hadzabe live at a time when cattle herding encroaches on their hunting lands and forces wild game away, where more and more traditional skills are being lost in favor of “Western” schooling, and where even the Hadza begin to rely on industrialized food over what they’re able to hunt and forage. The issues are manifold and extremely complex. But to hear Hadiya speak so passionately about the Hadza way, felt too important not to share. Just some food for thought.
