A light in the dark ⭐
Journey through the darkness of space to the constellation Aquila for a spectacular light show. This nebula, around 7,200 light-years away from Earth, is a hotbed of high-mass star formation. The stars that are born here are so massive that they will eventually become supernovae. Still, as they form, they shape their surroundings: the protostar at the center of the image sends out a jet of material toward us.
This picture was taken with NASAHubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 as part of research that measured the extent of ionization in the jets coming from the protostar within this nebula. Ionization is the process by which atoms or molecules become charged, often because they are in such a high-energy environment that they have lost some of their electrons.
