West Des Moines and its residents were given a compromise Monday on how to widen Ashworth Road along a stretch where the city's previous plans worried homeowners to the point of putting protest signs in their yards.
West Des Moines City Council members voted 4-1 on Monday to approve a preliminary design for widening Ashworth Road between 19th and 23rd streets that will incorporate 4-foot lane alignment changes in spots. The selected design reduces the total amount of property the city will acquire as right of way for the project to about 8,400 square feet.
Nine properties will lose land for right turn lanes to be added at 19th and 22nd streets, and a total of 21 properties will have a narrower distance between the road and sidewalks, according to information from the city.
Shane McClinton, a resident who lives at one of the homes that will lose land for a right turn lane to take traffic south to 19th Street, said Monday after the vote he was "relieved to be done with it, honestly."
