If you ask Des Moines Public Schools’ Lyn Wilson for a pair of shoes for a student in need, be ready to receive dozens.
Wilson — who has served for more than a year as the desmoinespublicschools liaison for homeless, migrant education and foundational services — is constantly on the alert for how the district can reach out to migrant students, whose parents move frequently for work in agriculture or seasonal industries, as well as more than 600 students who are homeless.
Wilson has been instrumental in opening district health clinics and expanding those services to include dental care. She also helped put food pantries in almost every DMPS school and wrote a grant application to cover the cost of basic supplies that homeless liaisons can give to families.
