Walking the streets where history and ambition collide ✊🏽🌍 Our Black Ambition 2024 Prize Winners began their Black Wall Street tour in New York City at the iconic “Four Continents” statues outside the U.S. Custom House, created by Daniel Chester French in the early 20th century. Each statue—America, Europe, Asia, and Africa—represents the world’s regions as seen at the time. -America stands confident, embodying the nation’s view as a global leader. -Europe exudes dominance and refinement, filled with symbols of knowledge and power. -Asia, with a Buddha, is depicted as religious yet stagnant. -Africa, symbolically unfinished and “slumbering,” highlights the era’s racist and imperialist views, reducing the continent to an incomplete idea. Our tour addressed these representations, particularly focusing on Africa. Described as “unfinished” and a slumbering figure, this statue is a stark reminder of the imperialistic ideologies that have often marginalized the motherland. Challengi...
