A central Iowa animal shelter is closing down its care program for cats, beginning with Waukee and West Des Moines. De Soto-based AHeinz57 Pet Rescue and Transport has contracted with Waukee since 2020 to provide the city shelter, care and impoundment services for stray cats and dogs, according to the city. People also can independently surrender their pets, but there is a waiting list and no guarantee that a pet can be taken in, according to aheinz57petrescue website, which currently isn't accepting new cats. The shelter informed Waukee in a Dec. 27 letter that the shelter would end its cat program, which owner Amy Heinz said is due to their high care costs compared to their adoption price. Waukee City Council members formally approved receipt of the letter Jan. 6. Tap the link in our bio for more on this story. #Waukee #WestDesMoines #Iowa
