Andy Cavin is the loudest person in West Des Moines. Well, at least on Tuesday and Friday nights during the Iowa high school basketball season. He spends those nights in the gym at Dowling Catholic, situated seven rows away from the court on the home side of the stands. He dishes out fist bumps and chats with an official before the start of the game. When everyone else in the stands sits after the national anthem, Cavin remains standing. He claps as Dowling players take the court. The focus is on the court and the 10 players competing, but it’s impossible to not hear Cavin’s voice echoing from the crowd. And while Cavin is a staple in the stands of dchs_maroons basketball games, he’s become much more than just another face in the crowd.
