What happens to old satellites? We asked a NASA expert.
Currently, old satellites either burn up safely upon reentry into the atmosphere, or they remain in space. But we're working on new technology that could make spaceflight more sustainable by refueling or upgrading satellites in space, greatly expanding their lifespans. OSAM-1, or the On-orbit Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing 1 mission, is could one day support satellites in need of servicing.
