While residents expressed frustration this month with the recent antics of members of the Polk County Board of Supervisors, bad blood between two of the five — Tom Hockensmith and Matt McCoy — is boiling over with new allegations of behind-the-scenes attacks and of political intrigue involving a Des Moines City Council member.
In an interview Tuesday, Hockensmith acknowledged he acted unprofessionally when he erupted in anger in the board's offices Jan. 3 and allegedly threatened McCoy and Supervisor Mark Holm — an act that has been referred to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
But as Hockensmith's heated conduct that day has been criticized and investigated, the 22-year supervisor from Des Moines' east side is painting a conspiracy against him involving McCoy and allies inside county government, including Holm; Jill Altringer; Frank Marasco, the top administrator in the Polk County Sheriff's Office; and Des Moines City Council member Joe Gatto.
