Solvent Savings Bank and Trust Company was the first African American-owned bank in Memphis, founded in 1906 by Robert R. Church Sr., the South’s first Black millionaire. This historic institution provided financial services to Black Memphians during a time when mainstream banks refused to serve them.
Why It Mattered:
• Empowered Black Businesses – Offered loans and financial support to Black entrepreneurs.
• Homeownership & Wealth Building – Helped Black families buy homes and secure their financial future.
• Community Growth – Became a pillar of economic independence for Memphis’ Black community.
Though it eventually closed, its impact remains a major part of Black financial history in Memphis and the U.S. Robert R. Church Sr.’s vision laid the foundation for future Black-owned financial institutions.
✊🏾 Black wealth, Black empowerment, Black history.
