With American consumers complaining loudly about spiking egg prices and shortages, the Trump administration is exploring whether to vaccinate the nation’s poultry flocks against bird flu, a deadly disease that’s fueled the crisis by forcing farmers to cull 166 million birds, including millions of laying hens.
Given the nation’s inability to quash highly pathogenic avian influenza, or HPAI, over the past three years, some experts say it’s time to look at vaccines, especially as the disease moves into dairy cows and is sickening a growing number of people, mostly those who work closely with animals.
The egg and turkey industries back a vaccine regimen, while farmers who raise broilers — chickens for meat — oppose it unless there are guarantees that global trade, a significant share of their market, wouldn’t be hurt.
