Since the COVID-19 pandemic, BART has faced decreased ridership. BART relies on fares for its revenue more than other public transportation agencies, with only 5% of its operating expenses being covered by the state in 2019, according to the press release.
The deadline for the state’s budget to be approved is June 15, and proposed funding would be split between Northern and Southern California, but the specific breakdown will be decided after the proposal has been approved, said Stefan Elgstrand, press secretary for Arreguín.
