I hate baking with little kids but the effort is worth the reward:
1. It is an immediate boost to their sense of self and we all know that when they feel great, their behavior is better.
2. It gives them a real sense of agency and accomplishment. Little kids ARE capable and when we treat them that way, they act that way.
3. When kids see themselves as contributing members of the family, they want to contribute more. Everyone wins.
But… baking with little kids can be a huge undertaking if you don’t use these tips:
1. Premeasure the ingredients and put them in separate containers so all they have to do is dump and mix.
2. Let children do the tricky parts like pressing the oven buttons and putting the tray in the oven. Use mitts and go slow, but when you let them do the “grownup” things like using the oven carefully, they rise to the occasion and exhibit calm and careful behavior.
