What’s the story behind this perk? In the early days before remote work was common, “culture” traditionally referred to the in-office experience. (Ping pong tables and kegs were quintessential examples of in-office startup culture!) Joel knew that we’d need to replace that in-office vibe with something that worked for a remote team, so the executive team decided to intentionally build our team culture and habits around our values.
When it came to our Self-Improvement value, we identified universal self-improvement habits: more exercise, better sleep, and reading. So, we gifted Kindles to everyone and started the free books program. We also gave everyone on the team Jawbone Ups to track steps and sleep (and, of course, we did it transparently!). The Jawbone was discontinued, but the Kindle program lives on.
