In downtown San Francisco, with the closure of Nordstrom and the approaching departure of Macy's, the ongoing survival of Neiman Marcus feels like a victory.
But it was not welcomed by many San Franciscans when the department store first opened in 1982. Its predecessor, the City of Paris, had been a beloved shopping destination — and local residents wanted to preserve this historic Beaux Arts-style building.
