I’m honored to be in Paris for SOS Ocean, surrounded by scientists, advocates, and policymakers who are deeply concerned about the state of the ocean. There’s a lot at stake this year—the BBNJ treaty, deep-sea mining, and protected areas, to name a few. SOS Ocean is gathering in preparation for UNOC3 in June, where the world has a real chance to take meaningful action. There have been powerful calls to action. Countries that haven’t yet ratified the BBNJ Treaty were urged to do so before UNOC3, so we can protect the high seas. President emmanuelmacron also invited nations to announce new marine protected areas at UNOC3, like the Dos Mares Biosphere Reserve in Baja, Mexico. When leaders step up, it sets a precedent, pushing others to follow and inspiring hope when we need it most. I’m here to be a voice for the ocean.
