Today is “Truth and Reconciliation Day” I didn’t know what this meant until I moved to Canada. Colonization happened in Canada, the US, and Australia and in countless other places that were treated in brutal, cruel and exploitative manner. This is a shameful stain in our collective history. As someone who is only partially indigenous, I can only try to be a good ally to the suffering and bravery of indigenous people and I can only try to understand the horrors they endured during the colonization of their lands. By educating ourselves and understanding what has been done to native people all around the world, we can prevent the horrors of residential schools from ever happening again and we can recognize and honor the values and wisdom of indigenous people. Wear an orange shirt today and stand with native people to say “we are sorry for what was done to you and your children and more importantly, how can we be better allies and how can we help?” . #truthandreconciliation Portrait of ...
