Happy World Water Day! This year’s theme is Glacier Preservation.
For many, glaciers evoke a sense of awe, but few realize just how vital they are. Glaciers act as natural storage systems, holding nearly 70% of Earth’s fresh water. They collect snow in winter and release meltwater in warmer months. This steady supply keeps rivers flowing, supports agriculture, and sustains ecosystems year-round.
But as glaciers rapidly shrink, this cycle is collapsing. In the Himalayas, they supply fresh water to over a billion people, yet these sources are becoming increasingly unstable. Salmon rely on glacier-fed streams, but as glaciers disappear, so do these critical habitats. At the poles, melting glaciers are reshaping coastlines, threatening wildlife like polar bears and seabirds, and putting coastal communities at risk.
This World Water Day is a chance to recognize just how much we rely on them—and how quickly they’re changing.
