How does coral shape our underwater world? Coral animals construct intricate structures. In the nooks and crannies or weaving offshoots of life, thousands of species find a home. Some may seek shelter, and predators may be up for a game of hide-and-seek. Regardless, creatures large, small, and everywhere in between are drawn to these abundant ecosystems. The world’s coral reefs house over 800 species of hard corals, 4,000 species of fish, and hundreds of other marine animals. In doing so, coral ecosystems support a higher density of species than any other marine environment. Thanks to the foundation they lay for thriving biodiversity, and the species they directly support, coral’s influence spreads past their warm water limits and throughout the sea.
