Of all the incredible gifts I have experienced from nature, getting closer to our ocean’s whales, dolphins, and true giants has been the most humbling. Nothing makes you feel smaller than swimming in the presence of an orca or meeting a sperm whale eye-to-eye beneath the surface. Humans have a long and complicated relationship with whales and dolphins spanning thousands of years. We have revered them, hunted them, and, at one point, nearly wiped their species off the map. Today, many are the subject of scientific study, conservation, and photography. The more time we spend immersed in their underwater world, the deeper our empathy and understanding for their species grows.
