Sperm whales are the largest toothed whale in the world and are known to dive over a mile in search of squid, their favourite prey. Over the centuries, humans have portrayed their species as creatures of myth and legend, stoking the fires of our imagination through art and literature. Since then we have come to understand the true nature of these giants from the deep as highly intelligent and sensitive beings led by their great matriarchs. Whales like Ariel, the baby sperm whale, and her mother pictured with a squid tentacle dangling from her mouth, navigate the vast ocean along migration routes passed down through the generations. The joy of sharing images like the ones above is that they reveal the hidden beauty beneath the surface, allowing us to connect with and appreciate the gifts of nature that many of us seem to take for granted.
