We know what Vincent van Gogh looked like mostly because of his self-portraits.
There is only one photograph of him that survives, taken when he was a teenager. So the image we have of him as an adult comes entirely from his self-portraits, which show a man with red hair, green eyes, and sharp features.
What makes this one stand out is that Van Gogh himself said it captured his “true character.”
Normally, he painted himself looking very serious and focused, but here you can see the exhaustion and weight of his struggles. The bright orange of his hair contrasts with the dark shadows beneath his eyes, while yellow and green tones emphasize his pale complexion and fragility.
This is one of his very last paintings—a raw reflection of pain and relentless passion. 💙
