If you've ever listened to an interview with a member of the cast of Voltron: Defender of the Universe, you've heard them bring up one piece of recording equipment with a mix of reminiscence and animosity: The stopwatch. Unlike the typical production process of an animated series at the time, which went Script -> Performance -> Animation, Voltron started with the full series of episodes already animated. The script and performance needed to match the existing footage. That meant getting the timing right. As it was the early 80s, the production didn't have digital tools to get it right. They had to find analog solutions. First, writers like Marc Handler would note the timing of dialogue down in the margins of a script. They'd sometimes have to deliver the dialogue themself to prove it could be done in the time allotted and match the mouth flaps (the technical-ish term).
