The year was 1989 when an iconic retractable roof stadium officially opened in Toronto. It all started in 1982 at a soggy Grey Cup game at Exhibition Stadium when most of the crowd was left seeing red after they were drenched with a fortnight's worth of rain. Rather than shake it off, former Premier of Ontario Bill Davis announced a committee to look into building a domed-style stadium located in the blank space at the base of the CN Tower to bolster the province's reputation. From the foundation to the pedestrian walkway, Skywalk, construction took more than a few midnights and ended up lasting two and a half years.
The popular SkyDome name was the result of a "Name the Stadium" contest that received over 150,000 entries, with the winner receiving preferred seating for evermore at the gorgeous venue.
