This past Saturday was the parinirvana anniversary of Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo (1820–1892), a celebrated teacher among different Tibetan Buddhist schools.
He studied with teachers from all traditions, possibly including Bon, and served as a teacher to most of the lamas of Kham during his lifetime. His expansive vision and non-sectarian approach attracted many famous disciples, including the famed Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Taye and Chokgyur Lingpa who pioneered his vision of establishing shared lineages. Because of his contribution to preserving and transmitting teachings from different traditions, he appears in many paintings as a lineage teacher. There are a few great masters recognized as his reincarnation, including Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche (1910–1991) and Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö (1893–1959).
