We’re celebrating our 30th anniversary with a look back at special moments from our community that have shaped Butterfly Pavilion over the past three decades. Today we’re featuring a submission from Kristen Engelke about her son, Ty:
“This is Ty Engelke at 1.5, 3, 22, and 23 years old at Butterfly Pavilion. It has been his favorite place since childhood. He began volunteering with the Florida Reef Track program as a College sophomore caring for the corals. He was eventually hired as an Invertebrate Zoo Keeper. Ty earned his BS in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at the University of Colorado. A year ago, Ty moved to Baltimore, MD, to work at the Carnegie Institute for Science at Johns Hopkins University. The lab he joined is doing groundbreaking research to help corals become heat tolerant. Ty's research, thus far, has contributed significantly to advancements in genetic modification to Aiptasia Anemone, a close cousin to corals. Good job, Butterfly Pavilion, for inspiri...
