In each case, judges denied the request, citing not just the seriousness of the crime but the lack of time available to provide those services before the defendants aged out of the juvenile court's jurisdiction. That lack of time is a common concern in cases involving young adults in trouble with the law. Iowa law addresses this by allowing, in some cases, juvenile courts to continue providing services to young people until they are 21.
