When 10 teens were arrested after a 2022 drive-by shooting outside East High School, eight were charged as adults. Several asked the court to return their cases to juvenile court, pointing to the services and rehabilitation options adult proceedings didn't offer. In each case, judges denied the request, citing not just the seriousness of the crime but the lack of time available to provide those services before the defendants aged out of the juvenile court's jurisdiction. That lack of time is a common concern in cases involving young adults in trouble with the law. Iowa law addresses this by allowing, in some cases, juvenile courts to continue providing services to young people until they are 21. And according to the Iowa Judicial Branch, funding is available to provide those services. But according to lawyers and judges who actually work with such cases, there's no funding to be found.
