Racism in America is deeply rooted in a violent history of slavery, systemic oppression, and institutional anti-Blackness that affects nearly every part of life—from policing to employment—often making it dangerous and exhausting to exist as a Black person. In contrast, racism in China is more often based on ignorance, stereotypes, or lack of exposure rather than hatred or systemic targeting, and while offensive behavior does happen, it’s usually not life-threatening. Many Black people prefer China because they feel less surveilled, less policed, and more free to live without the constant burden of American racial trauma, even if they still face cultural barriers or occasional discrimination. Living in and Walking the streets of Shanghai I felt a burden lifted off my shoulders that I had never experienced before. It was undeniably the freest I’d ever felt in my entire life.
