I let my 4th grade son deal with his forgotten lunch even though I could easily have brought it to school. The result? He solved his own problem and learned to advocate for himself. (Edited to add: he was not shamed for forgetting, he was in a VERY supportive environment, and he was so excited to try the school lunch and use a voucher. We celebrated his success at dinner that night as he shared his story with his sisters. If you’ve been on my page for more than a minute, you know that I treat my children with respect, love and deep care. )
Years later, I rushed my daughter’s forgotten things to school multiple times during her struggle with anxiety. Different child, different needs, different season.
This isn’t being inconsistent - it’s being responsive.
