I am by no means a master colorist—but here’s what’s worked for me.
Over time, I’ve learned that getting the right exposure in-camera makes the biggest difference. I shoot in S-Log3 on the Sony FX3. I shoot with a display lut and use the same Rec.709 conversion LUT I use in post. This helps me get a better feel of what the image will look like while I shoot.
Here’s a quick breakdown of my color grading workflow:
1. Convert to Rec.709
2. Add contrast—enough to deepen the blacks without blowing out highlights
3. Use Luma vs. Sat to pull saturation from the brightest/darkest parts (so my whites stay white and blacks stay black)
4. Tweak Hue vs. Hue, especially to separate blues and purples depending on the team colors I am shooting.
5. Boost or reduce the main colors of my image using Hue vs. Sat to give the image a distinct feel and make certain colors pop.
6. Add my personal LUT and adjust intensity so it enhances the look and gives it my style without overpowering the image. ...
