NO ROBOTS!: Here’s my gripe with “getting around the ball.” Just like we tell a running back to not run east and west, but instead move north and south to get up field. The same should be for a routine ground ball. We program “getting around the ball” so much in young players brains, that it’s the first and only move they know how to do as soon as the ball is hit, is to move laterally to the right. We’re taking away from them being a natural athlete and working downhill. I see so many players first step going right, even if the ball is hit to their left. At higher levels first step efficiency can be the difference of creating an out or not. As always, knowing WHEN to do a move is just as important as knowing HOW to do a move.
