Wow! It’s a beautiful Saturday in the East End and we are only a week out from the 51st Annual Galveston Historic Homes Tour. Do you have your tickets yet?! galvestonhistory All of our island’s historic homes are full of stories and often mysteries… The 1886 Jacob and Martha Bernheim House, which will be featured on this year’s tour, has a sad mystery of its own. In March of 1890, the Bernheim’s young Irish housemaid, Mary, began to exhibit signs of fatigue, enough to encourage Mrs. Bernheim to call for a doctor. After the doctor diagnosed her with insomnia, the concerning situation went from bad to worse. The next day, Mary was nowhere to be found and her prescriptions were untouched. Ultimately, she was found deceased just down the street inside the cistern of one of Jacob’s business partners, Nathan Redlich. The jury ruled the death an accidental drowning.
