Back in the 1980s, the survival rate for breast cancer was about 50%. Today, 97% of people will be cured of their disease, explained Dr. Donald McDonnell, a cancer pharmacology professor at Duke University.
Elacestrant, a breast cancer therapy, was discovered in McDonnell's lab. Its path from lab bench to lifesaving treatment is a powerful example of what’s possible through long-term federal investment in biomedical research—and the vital role universities play in turning discoveries into real-world impact.
