Check out the desert hairy scorpion in our Legacies: Invertebrates of Mexico exhibit! Often misunderstood, these incredible invertebrates play a vital role in their ecosystems. Despite their tough reputation, desert hairy scorpions are far less threatening than they seem. Like many scorpions, they’re experts at hiding in small cracks and crevices to avoid the heat and predators during the day. Although their sting is primarily used for self-defense, its effects have even inspired Indigenous communities in Mexico to discover and use medicinal plants to relieve the irritation. At Butterfly Pavilion, our scorpion is safe and thriving in its habitat, and you can witness its natural instincts in action—if you look closely enough!
