Rutgers postdoc Joe Gradone piloted an ocean robot into a hurricane!
He is using underwater gliders to help us better predict dangerous storms and understand how the ocean shapes our climate.
From tinkering with skateboards as a kid to chasing hurricanes with cutting-edge ocean tech, Joe’s work is making real-world impact — and he’s passionate about making science accessible to everyone.
This summer, he guided a glider straight into the eye of Hurricane Beryl — the earliest Category 5 storm on record — from his living room in New Jersey. The data helped improve real-time forecasts at the National Hurricane Center.🔬📡
Science like this helps keep communities safe and builds a better future for us all.
