Put a stop to nitrate poisoning in your herd! If your herd is experiencing rapid breathing, frequent urination, diarrhea or sudden death, your cattle might be suffering the result of nitrate poisoning. Nitrates are a necessary component of plant growth. The compound is not toxic but factors such as drought stress on plants or excessive spring nitrogen applications can lead to high levels of nitrate, which can pose a serious health risk to livestock. You can monitor the nitrate levels in forage crops and plants through a nitrate specific forage test. Take a plant sample for a rapid qualitative test to your local extension center or prepare a forage sample to mail to a lab for a quantitative nitrate test.
