As Republican lawmakers seek to ban Medicaid from paying for gender-affirming medical care for transgender Iowans, state data show spending on those services has grown from just a few thousand dollars in 2015 to hundreds of thousands per year by 2024.
Legislative Republicans are seeking to halt the use of Medicaid dollars for gender-affirming care, saying taxpayers shouldn't pay for gender transitions. The bill passed the Senate Appropriations Committee on May 6 on a vote of 13-9, making it eligible for a vote by the full Senate.
The effort comes after Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a law earlier this year removing gender identity as a protected class in the Iowa Civil Rights Act.
