Gov. Kim Reynolds’ broad energy bill is running into a wall of opposition, with a coalition of small business, large manufacturing, tech and consumer groups saying the measure could cost Iowans tens of millions of dollars more each year than it should to meet the state’s growing power needs. In an unusual move, five former Iowa utility regulators also are voicing concern, sending state legislators a letter that says Reynolds’ companion bills, Senate File 585 and House File 834, open the door to higher consumer bills. Opponents want lawmakers to amend the legislation to better protect the state’s businesses and families, or table it until next year.
