The U.S. Department of Education wants states to label more public schools “persistently dangerous.”
That’s because a little-used provision of federal education law known as the “unsafe school choice option” allows students who attend schools labeled dangerous to transfer to any other school in their district. That includes public charter schools, favored by the Trump administration, which are not required to have unionized teaching staffs.
