Ever seen a carnivorous snail lay an egg through its neck? You can now. ⁣ The threatened Powelliphanta augusta snail in New Zealand is endemic to a mined mountain habitat; conservationists filming snails in captivity witnessed this rare event for the first time in 12 years.⁣ ⁣ These slow-reproducing, long-lived hermaphroditic snails take eight years to mature and lay about five eggs annually, which can take over a year to hatch. Relocation efforts have helped the captive population slowly grow after facing mining threats.⁣ ⁣ #snail #prehistoric #animals #reproduction
