Every Wednesday this semester, Sophie Wasserman—or Fern as she's known at Outdoor School—stepped out of the traditional classroom and into nature through RPTM 240, a Health and Human Development course in partnership with Shaver's Creek Environmental Center. 🌿💫💚 After two years volunteering as a counselor, Sophie returned to Outdoor School with a new role and perspective—this time as a Learning Group Leader at Camp Blue Diamond where she guided 15 fifth-grade students through lessons that brought ecosystems to life, answering the question: "How do the living and non-living parts of the ecosystem interrelate and change over time?" Surrounded by nature, Sophie saw how students thrive through hands-on learning and personal connection. She quickly adapted her teaching style to meet their needs—finding creative ways to make them feel comfortable, engaged, and ready to learn.
