Because it lives off rotting meat, the American burying beetle is exposed to a lot of nasty stuff as it eats. However, these beetles are extremely resistant to pathogens, including bacteria, and fungi. Researchers have recently discovered they're also resistant to powerful insecticides, recovering quickly from doses that would kill other beetles. Now, scientists hope the resilience of these hardy little scavengers could be the key to developing new medicines for human beings.
