A lawmaker is accusing Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation agents of secretly tracking cellphone activity inside the state Capitol, reviving a public relations headache for the investigators over a controversial sports betting probe that employed the same technology.
Iowa Rep. Megan Jones, R-Sioux Rapids, said during a budget debate May 14 that lawmakers recently learned DCI agents had tested the software inside the Capitol about two years ago before using it in the investigation. Jones accused the agency of invading the privacy of lawmakers and visitors in the building.
DCI spokesperson Tawny Kruse declined to answer a question from the Des Moines Register about whether agents tracked cellphone activity inside the Capitol. But she did say in an email that the division used “different geographical areas” to train DCI agents on software that tracks the location of sports betters in the state.
