Are Land Acknowledgements… Political? 🥴
Four professors at the University of British Columbia (UBC) have filed a lawsuit challenging the university’s use of Indigenous land acknowledgements, arguing they constitute “political activity” and infringe on academic freedom. ✏️
The professors claim UBC’s standard land acknowledgment compels them to support what they view as an ideological stance. But Indigenous leaders say this framing ignores the constitutional and legal realities of whose land is being acknowledged.
🗣️ “We are not a political ideology. We are the original titleholders of these lands,” said the Syilx Nation in a public statement. “To frame our existence as political opinion is harmful.”
